PepsiCo Walkers Crisps – Digitising Europe’s Snack Manufacturing Facilities

For almost a decade, Luminous Group has partnered with PepsiCo International to support the digital transformation of its European snacks division — including iconic brands such as Walkers Crisps, Doritos, Lay’s, and Cheetos.

During this time, we have completed comprehensive 3D laser scanning, point cloud capture, and as-built modelling of all PepsiCo Snacks manufacturing facilities across Europe. This long-term programme has allowed PepsiCo to modernise its factories, plan upgrades more efficiently, and adopt new automation technologies with confidence.

Digitising Complex Manufacturing Environments

Food and beverage production facilities are among the most complex and constantly evolving industrial environments. New robotics, packaging systems, and energy-efficient technologies are introduced frequently — but even the smallest design error or installation clash can disrupt production and lead to costly downtime.

By maintaining accurate 3D scans and digital twins of their plants, PepsiCo’s engineering teams can now:

  • Plan and simulate upgrades virtually before work begins on site
  • Identify and eliminate clashes early, reducing delays and risk
  • Coordinate remotely with design and construction partners
  • Achieve faster, safer project delivery with minimal disruption to operations

3D Laser Scanning as a Catalyst for Efficiency

Luminous captured each facility using high-precision 3D laser scanners and mobile mapping systems, producing millimetre-accurate point clouds that form the foundation for as-built models and digital twins.
These datasets have become a single source of truth for PepsiCo’s engineering and operations teams, improving decision-making and long-term asset management.

The value of this approach was amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel restrictions limited site access. With complete 3D models available online, PepsiCo engineers could plan installations and conduct remote design reviews without being physically on site — keeping critical projects moving despite global lockdowns.

From Laser Scans to Digital Twins and Immersive Training

Luminous has extended this capability beyond engineering.
By transforming scan data into fully interactive digital twins, we enable PepsiCo to train operators and maintenance teams in virtual reality (VR) before new lines or equipment are even installed.

These multi-user VR environments allow:

Remote induction and familiarisation with new machinery
Simulation of real-world scenarios such as maintenance or safety procedures
Reduced commissioning time and faster “vertical start-ups” for new systems
This proactive approach helps PepsiCo achieve its sustainability and efficiency goals while keeping teams safer and better prepared.

Navvis platform

Powered by NavVis – Cloud-Based Collaboration

As a NavVis Partner, Luminous uses the NavVis IVION platform to host PepsiCo’s digital twins securely in the cloud.
This gives all stakeholders — from plant engineers to global project managers — instant browser-based access to:

  • Navigate 3D environments remotely
  • Take accurate measurements
  • Mark up and share annotations
  • Plan modifications and maintenance activities collaboratively
  • With NavVis IVION,  digital assets are always up to date, accessible, and actionable.

A Turnkey Digital Transformation Partner

At Luminous, we don’t just deliver scans, we deliver an end-to-end digital transformation service.
Our ongoing maintenance and re-scan contracts ensure each facility remains a living, accurate digital twin, reflecting every physical change. This guarantees data certainty, asset traceability, and a reliable foundation for BIM, training, and operational excellence.

PepsiCo’s partnership with Luminous Group demonstrates how 3D laser scanning and digital twins can revolutionise enterprise manufacturing. By combining precision scanning, immersive training, and cloud-based collaboration, companies can achieve smarter, safer, and more sustainable operations — all grounded in accurate data.

The Luminous team provide 3D scanning across the globe from the UK to the Middle East.
