Offshore 3D Laser Scanning & Digital Twin Case Study – Belford Dolphin Drillship

Offshore 3D Laser Scanning & Digital Twin Case Study – Belford Dolphin Drillship

Offshore 3D laser scanning and digital twin services for drillships, FPSOs, and oil & gas assets, improving safety and reducing downtime.

Offshore Laser Scanning & Digital Twin Services for Dolphin Drilling

For over 15 years, the Luminous team have been at the forefront of offshore 3D laser scanning, digital twin creation, and industrial visualisation, delivering highly accurate reality capture solutions for some of the world’s most demanding offshore and marine environments.

In 2015, Luminous were commissioned by Dolphin Drilling to undertake a comprehensive offshore laser scanning survey of the Belford Dolphin, an ultra-deepwater drillship engineered for operations in harsh offshore conditions.

Originally constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea, the vessel features a DP3 dynamic positioning system alongside an innovative moonpool and bilge keel configuration designed to provide superior motion stability during deepwater drilling operations.

As part of ongoing maintenance, modification, and upgrade programmes, the Luminous survey team mobilised offshore to Mozambique while the vessel remained fully operational.

Offshore 3D Laser Scanning While Live Operations

Working within an active offshore drilling environment requires specialist planning, offshore certification, and survey methodologies capable of operating safely in confined, high-risk areas.

Using high-accuracy terrestrial laser scanning technology, Luminous captured millions of survey points across critical drilling and pressure control systems, generating a highly detailed digital record of the vessel’s existing condition.

Key Offshore Systems Captured

  • Riser tensioners
  • Cement lines
  • Choke and kill manifolds
  • Mud standpipes
  • BOP bleed spool assemblies
  • Pipework and structural interfaces
  • Mechanical and process equipment layouts

The resulting point cloud data enabled the production of accurate as-built 3D models for engineering, fabrication, and offshore maintenance planning.

Accurate As-Built Models for Offshore Engineering & Fabrication

From the captured scan data, the Luminous engineering team developed detailed as-built 3D models to support replacement part design, retrofit engineering, and offshore asset modifications.

By working from accurate laser scan data rather than outdated drawings, Dolphin Drilling were able to significantly reduce project risk and improve fabrication accuracy.

Benefits of Offshore Laser Scanning

  • First-time-fit fabrication accuracy
  • Eliminate costly offshore rework and reduce fabrication errors.
  • Reduced offshore downtime
  • Minimise shutdown periods and keep critical drilling operations running efficiently.
  • Improved safety offshore
  • Reduce the need for repeated site visits and minimise personnel exposure in hazardous environments.
  • Clash detection before installation
  • Identify spatial conflicts early within the design process.
  • Accurate as-built documentation
  • Capture real-world asset conditions for engineering and maintenance teams.
  • Remote engineering collaboration
  • Allow engineers and stakeholders to review assets digitally from anywhere in the world.
  • Support for brownfield modifications
  • Ideal for ageing offshore assets where original drawings may be incomplete or inaccurate.
  • Enhanced project planning
  • Improve scheduling, prefabrication, logistics, and installation sequencing.

Offshore Digital Twin & Virtual Reality Visualisation

Continuing to push the boundaries of offshore reality capture, the Luminous team further optimised and textured the laser scan data to create a fully immersive Training digital twin of the Belford Dolphin.

The digital twin environment allowed teams to interact with the vessel virtually, creating new opportunities for operational planning and offshore workforce training.

Applications of Offshore Digital Twins

  • Offshore crew familiarisation
  • Emergency response planning
  • Safety training simulations
  • Remote inspections
  • Maintenance planning
  • Asset lifecycle management
  • Engineering visualisation
  • Stakeholder communication

The immersive VR model provided Dolphin Drilling with a powerful tool for improving operational readiness while reducing the need for physical offshore mobilisation.

Offshore Laser Scanning in Harsh Marine Environments

Scanning offshore assets presents unique technical and logistical challenges, including:

  • Vessel movement and vibration
  • Harsh weather conditions
  • Confined spaces
  • Live operational environments
  • Hazardous zones
  • Restricted access areas

The Luminous offshore survey team have extensive experience operating safely in these complex conditions, delivering reliable, high-accuracy data capture across offshore rigs, FPSOs, drillships, production platforms, and marine infrastructure worldwide with a dedicated 3D laser Scanning Middle East team.

Delivering Offshore Reality Capture Worldwide

This project demonstrates how offshore laser scanning, digital twins, and immersive training and visualisation technologies can transform the management of offshore energy assets.

By combining precise reality capture with engineering expertise, Luminous help offshore operators improve safety, reduce downtime, optimise maintenance, and make smarter asset management decisions throughout the lifecycle of their facilities.
